The Right Way to Brainstorm

Often, the hardest thing when beginning a project is simply just starting. A well thought out creative process will help ideas flow and spark creativity. Whether you are working on a big project or are in a rut, or want to kickstart a new project, our best tips for a successful brainstorm session will help you get that ball rolling.

Apply the Goldilocks Theory

The size of your crew is important. A large number of people for a brainstorm has the potential to be disruptive and counterproductive, leaving members feeling unheard. On the other hand, a group that is too small can make it difficult to generate collaborative ideas. It might be different for you, but for us, the sweet spot sits around 4-5 people and is jussssst right.

Let the Bad Ideas Roll

Most of the ideas that are presented in a brainstorm session are not keepers. That’s totally fine! As you lay all of the pieces out on the table, those bad ideas will give way to your golden ideas.

Be Constructive

Ideas that aren’t great still have value, so if you’re leading a team, be sure to foster a constructive dynamic between team members. Criticizing the comments of your team and will be counterproductive as others will be less willing to share.

Keep It Short and Sweet

Idea formulation is exhausting work and can lead to burnout if there is poor management. Be efficient in planning your brainstorm session- have a loose plan that is flexible, but structured. Many of the best solutions come after the fact, so keep your meetings short and spend more time outside of the session finalizing the development of your ideas.
