Who’s Got the Tunes?

Spotify premium is the best money we spend all month.

At Sovic, our team works in very close quarters. The music played throughout our small, open concept office creates a sense of unity. While Luiz might veto Corey’s reggae, and Corey might veto Jamie’s Christmas carols (in July), generally there is a large overlap in our taste in music.

This article backs up our theory that happy music has the power to establish cooperation and support in the workplace. When coworkers confine music to their headphones, barriers to collaboration are created.

We have found that music creates another layer of depth to our relationships as we work together. It creates a shared experience and allows for higher levels of productivity. Depending on the mood of the day, we have specific tracks that boost our productivity, inspire creative thinking or just a good laugh. We polled our team about favorite tunes for every office occasion:

  • In the zone: “Morning” by Beck

  • When your toe’s a-tappin’: “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Orchestra

  • It’s another rainy day: “Cold Little Heart” by Michael Kiwanuka

  • We’ve got a tight deadline: “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen

  • Pre-first cup of coffee: “Zombie” by The Cranberries

  • Casual Friday: “Coming Home” by Leon Bridges

  • When the Internet goes out: “Baby Come Back” by Player

  • Project’s done, let’s celebrate: “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac

  • Luiz’ Walkout Song: “I’ll Stand by You” by Pretenders

  • Feeling nostaglic: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler

  • Belt it out: “Africa” by Toto

Tips for letting tunes flow throughout your office:

  • Take turns DJ-ing: Let each team member have a chance to share their favorites.

  • Read the room: Upbeat or loud music can be distracting to a coworker on an important phone call. Soft music creates a welcoming environment for a new client.

  • Mix it up: There’s nothing worse than listening to the same thing over and over. Change it up and let multiple people contribute.

We’ve created a Sovic playlist on Spotity to share our motivating tunes with you. Enjoy!
