Google Local Service Ads vs Google Ads: Which Should a DFW Service Business Run First?

By Luiz Baptista, Art Director & Principal, Sovic Creative. Updated October 2026.

For most DFW service businesses, start with Local Service Ads if Google offers them for your trade, then add Google Search Ads once your website is ready to convert. LSAs charge per lead and put your phone number at the very top of the page. Search Ads give you more control, but they only pay off when they land on a page that does its job.

That is the short answer. Here is how we think about it with clients, and how to do the most with the least.

What is the difference between Local Service Ads and Google Ads?

They both show up on Google, but they work differently.

Local Service Ads (LSAs)

  • Show at the top of results for searches like "plumber near me" or "AC repair Fort Worth."

  • You pay for leads (calls, messages, booking requests), not clicks.

  • Your business has to pass Google's screening before ads run. Depending on the category that can include background checks, license and insurance checks.

  • Approved businesses get a Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge.

  • The ad is built from your profile, reviews and service area. You do not write ad copy or pick keywords.

Google Search Ads

  • Text ads that show on search results for the keywords you choose.

  • You pay per click, whether or not that visitor calls.

  • You control keywords, ad copy, locations, schedule and which page each ad sends people to.

  • They work for almost any business, not only the categories Google supports for LSAs.

Which one should a Fort Worth service business run first?

If your trade is eligible, we usually start with LSAs. Three reasons:

  1. You pay for conversations, not curiosity. A click can be someone comparing prices from their couch. An LSA lead is someone who called or messaged you.

  2. They do not depend on your website. The ad lives on Google, so even a business with a weak site can start getting calls while the site gets fixed.

  3. Setup is simpler. No keyword lists or ad copy to test. Your job is to get verified, keep your profile complete and answer the phone.

When do Google Search Ads make more sense?

LSAs are not the answer for everyone. Search Ads are the better first move when:

  • Your service is not an LSA category. Plenty of B2B, specialty and commercial services are not covered.

  • You want specific jobs. If you want more water heater installs and fewer small repair calls, keywords and landing pages let you aim at that work. LSAs give you much less control over job type.

  • You sell a higher-ticket service with a longer decision. A buyer researching a remodel or a commercial contract wants to see your work, your process and your reviews. That happens on your website.

  • You are building a brand, not just a phone line. Search Ads drive people to your site, where they learn who you are. LSA leads often never see your site at all.

Why does your website matter even with Local Service Ads?

Because people check you out before they call back, and after they hang up.

Someone gets your name from an LSA, then searches it. If they land on an outdated site with no prices, no photos of real work and a broken contact form, you lose them to the next listing. The ad paid for the lead. The website closes it.

For Search Ads it is even more direct. Every click lands on a page you control. We say it all the time: website first. We would be doing you a disservice spending your ad budget sending people to a page that does not convert.

Before running Search Ads, make sure your landing page has:

  • A clear headline that matches what they searched

  • Your service area and the services you actually offer

  • Reviews and real project photos

  • A phone number that is tappable on mobile and a short form

  • Call and form tracking, so you know which ads produce leads

What makes Local Service Ads work well?

Getting approved is step one. Getting leads is about the details Google weighs when it decides who to show:

  • Reviews. Ask every happy customer, and reply to every review. This matters for LSAs, your Google Business Profile and AI answers.

  • Responsiveness. Answer calls and messages fast. Missed calls cost you the lead and can hurt how often you show.

  • Accurate hours and service area. Only list what you really cover.

  • Lead disputes. Mark leads as booked or not, and dispute the ones that are spam or outside your services.

  • Your profile. Keep business details, categories and photos current and consistent with your website and Google Business Profile.

Can you run both at the same time?

Yes, and once the basics are working, most service businesses should. LSAs catch people ready to call right now. Search Ads catch the searches LSAs miss and send people to pages built for the jobs you want most.

The order matters more than the mix:

  1. Fix the website basics.

  2. Turn on LSAs if your trade is eligible.

  3. Add Search Ads on your most valuable services, sent to matching pages.

  4. Track every call and form, then move budget toward whatever produces booked jobs.

Numbers don't lie. After a few months you will know which channel brings jobs at a cost that makes sense, and you can shift spend toward it. Digital takes time, so give each channel enough runway to judge it fairly.

The bottom line

If Google offers LSAs for your trade, start there. They charge per lead and work while your site catches up. Add Search Ads when your website is ready to turn clicks into calls, and point them at the work you want more of.

FAQs

Are Google Local Service Ads worth it for a small business? For eligible trades, often yes. You pay per lead instead of per click, and your business can show at the top of local results with a Google badge. Results depend on reviews, responsiveness and your service area.

Do I need a website to run Local Service Ads? Not technically. LSAs run from your Google profile. But most customers look you up before they call back, so a clear, current website helps you close the leads you pay for.

What is the difference between Google Guaranteed and Google Screened? Both are badges Google gives businesses that pass its LSA screening. Which one you get depends on your business category. Check Google's current requirements for your trade.

Can I get charged for bad Local Service Ads leads? You can dispute leads that are spam, outside your service area or for services you do not offer. Google reviews disputes and may credit valid ones, so review your leads regularly.

Should I run Local Service Ads and Google Search Ads together? Once your website is ready and you are tracking leads, yes. LSAs catch people ready to call now, and Search Ads let you target specific jobs and send people to matching pages.
